6 ways to lose weight with Chia seeds

Chia seeds are a powerful source of fibre, vitamins and minerals as well as good fats. A great antioxidant, Chia seeds are recognised as a super food, and for very good reason. When added to some of the foods you are having already, they can easily become a key part of your weight loss diet and help keep you full and nourished at the same time. As we take a look at 6 ways to lose weight with Chia seeds, it is important to know that Chia seeds are good for so many things, and here are just a few:

1 – Add Chia seeds to your smoothies

What is a smoothie without Chia seeds? Boring. Add Chia seeds to your smoothies to give them more texture and you’ll be amazed at how much more you get out of your meal replacement smoothies with this little trick.

Instead of feeling hungry again a short while after, you will be able to go for hours without feeling like you need to sit down to another meal. This I have found is a great strategy to help lose weight with Chia seeds.

2 – Chia seed pudding

A healthy desert, in moderation, is a Chia seed pudding. Add coconut cream and Chia seeds to a small bowl and let it rest in the fridge. Overnight this will become a rich and tasty dessert that is also good for you – but don’t have too much of it too often; this is a treat, not a staple.

Play with the ratio of Chia seeds to coconut cream to find what you like the most. I find that ¼ of a cup of Chia seeds and 2 cups of coconut cream is the right balance for me.

3 – Jam and preserves

Adding Chia seeds to your jams and preserves can do a lot to both help with the thickening, and they add a dimension of texture and subtle flavour that is a nice surprise. Now having homemade strawberry jam which is naturally low in sugar is so much more exciting and healthy.

4 – Homemade protein balls

Why go out and spend crazy amounts of money on protein balls when you can make them at home so easily? Add Chia seeds to your protein balls and you’ll find that they fit in with other ingredients like cocoa, coconut oil, agave, pepitas, sunflower kernels, finely chopped dates, and almond meal. Try this great recipe a good friend created and shared with me from her very own kitchen:

  • ½ of a cup of Chia seeds
  • 4 tablespoons of tahini and sesame seed paste
  • 4 tablespoons of almond butter or peanut butter
  • 3 tablespoons of protein powder
  • 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon of salt
  • 4 tablespoons of agave or honey (honey will make this much sweeter than agave)
  • 1 tablespoon of coconut oil
  • ¼ cup of shredded coconut
  • ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract

Mix all of these ingredients together into a consistent blend. The mix should be a thick putty-like consistency. Roll the mix into 12 or 16 balls, size depending on what you want, and roll in shredded coconut to coat. Place the protein balls in the fridge and allow the balls to set.

Place the mix in the fridge or leave it in a cool place for around 30 minutes before rolling into balls. You will find that if you try to roll the mix in the coconut too soon that it can be difficult to handle compared to when it is slightly firmer and not as sticky.

When you want to lose weight with Chia seeds, make sure that these protein balls do not become a snack that you consume frequently. They are intended to be a meal replacement and should be accompanied with a big glass of water. I usually have the water first so I can enjoy the flavour of the protein balls as they slowly melt in my mouth.

5 – Mix them with your breakfast

Used to top a muesli or oatmeal, Chia seeds are extremely versatile. There’s no reason why breakfast should lack flavour so add some fresh fruit like banana, berries, apple, or mango. Chia seeds work very well with a fruit salad, which is a great way to start the day healthily and make it exciting to lose weight with Chia seeds also.

6 – Add them to your main meals

Chia seeds don’t need to be reserved exclusively for breakfast, smoothies and protein balls. By adding them to main dishes like soups and meals with a creamy sauce such as butter chicken or a korma, you’ll find that they work extremely well and you may even wonder why you didn’t do that before.
